Let there be Light
Monday, June 29th, 2009After stalking this post, I decided that I would give it the ol’ college try and attempt to make a pendant light for the dormer in my converted attic. Luckily, it didn’t turn out too bad.
I used a giant bouncing ball from Target for $2.50, a couple of packages of white yarn from Hobby Lobby ($2 apiece), a little bit of craft glue that I already had, and a lot of fabric stiffener (again, from Hobby Lobby and about $5).
It took several sessions of wrapping the yarn, and I finally figured out that I could put the ball on top of a bucket and just pour the fabric stiffener all over it. In the beginning I was using a brush and trying to get all the yarn covered, but that was taking too long. Then, once everything was stiff and completely dry, I took a needle and poked a few holes in the ball. I pulled the rubber remains from the stringed orb, and… ta dah!
The jury is still out on that hanging string at the bottom. It dried that way, but I’m thinking of doing another (modified) round of fabric stiffener in a few places just to tighten it up a little more. Also, please forgive the picture, I hung it up very quickly so that you all could get the idea, however, I will share some pictures of the finished space later this week.
