Master Bath Storage After

I bought this cabinet at a closeout sale for an antiques store here in Omaha. It was $10, not too bad of a deal. It also came with a board for every slat, but I took most of them out. I did keep them because I thought it could be used later in my office/studio and would be great organizational storage.

The wallpaper is from a roll I bought at Target (on sale for $8!). I didn’t paper the back as well as I should have (or would have for a client) but it still looks pretty great.  My end goal is to get a few pieces of glass for the shelves and chic it up a little more. Until then, this will work just fine.

A Little Before and After Action

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

IMG_4153

The before which was a little too traditional for my taste.

Untitled-2

The after that fits my aesthetic a wee bit more.

I painted it with the green paint leftover from my bathroom redo and I found the rad drawer pull at Anthropologie (they’re leaves). I’m feelin’ the love for it now.

Some Rearranging

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

I switched around my bedroom a little bit so that I could make my closet feel more like a fancy dressing room. My vanity went in the closet and my favorite wire hangers came out into the bedroom, on a wall that leads into the bathroom. Made sense to me.

It was like this. And now, this:

Must say that it is pretty handy to have all my goodies right together. I do wish I had a window in my closet to let in some natural light.

Hangers from the close-out sale from our long gone, but sorely missed World Market. They were selling everything, including the fixtures, and that is where I swooped in.

I think it is much better this way.

Feliz Cumpleanos America!

Monday, July 6th, 2009

I hope everyone had a wonderful fourth of July weekend. As for me, the husband and I threw a Mexican-themed fiesta for our holiday experience since we missed celebrating Cinco de Mayo, I’m from New Mexico, and we are strange. It was a blast.

Ohmeohmy, did I make a ton of food including, Mexican pizzas, guacamole, homemade salsa, tortilla chips, moco coco cupcakes, and cinnamon sugar tortilla crisps with warm chocolate sauce spiked with a little red chili powder. Um, and did you know you can now buy boxes of margaritas, similar in theory to the wine boxes that stole my heart not too long ago? Well, you can and I highly recommend them.

Alright, on to the spread.

IMG_4174

I wanted to do a trial layout before the food was ready. If I don’t do it that way, I forget what I have to serve on and I would quickly dump my food into some weird dish I had handy. Since we got all kinds of stuff for our wedding, I thought it would be a waste if I didn’t use a lot of it. The wall-hangings used as table runners are from New Mexico and given to me from my mother.

The cupcakes had tequila in them.

IMG_4186

I tried to find red tortilla chips to blend my two themes of a Mexican fiesta and the fourth of July. However, I did not and just used a red napkin to line my bowl of blue corn and yellow corn tortilla chips. Get it? Red, white and blue. Cute, eh?

I’ll share the recipes with you later.

Let there be Light

Monday, June 29th, 2009

After stalking this post, I decided that I would give it the ol’ college try and attempt to make a pendant light for the dormer in my converted attic. Luckily, it didn’t turn out too bad.

I used a giant bouncing ball from Target for $2.50, a couple of packages of white yarn from Hobby Lobby ($2 apiece), a little bit of craft glue that I already had, and a lot of fabric stiffener (again, from Hobby Lobby and about $5).

It took several sessions of wrapping the yarn, and I finally figured out that I could put the ball on top of a bucket and just pour the fabric stiffener all over it. In the beginning I was using a brush and trying to get all the yarn covered, but that was taking too long. Then, once everything was stiff and completely dry, I took a needle and poked a few holes in the ball. I pulled the rubber remains from the stringed orb, and… ta dah!

The jury is still out on that hanging string at the bottom. It dried that way, but I’m thinking of doing another (modified) round of fabric stiffener in a few places just to tighten it up a little more. Also, please forgive the picture, I hung it up very quickly so that you all could get the idea, however, I will share some pictures of the finished space later this week.

Infusions

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

img_4103

I got three of these bottles from Ikea this past weekend (at $2.99) and plan on infusing vodka with raspberries, vodka with peppers, and then making a simple syrup. Yum, I can’t wait to have cocktails this weekend.

Oh and yes, we have a raspberry bush in our backyard, so you will be seeing more recipes with the delectable berries.

Megan’s House Tour

Monday, June 15th, 2009

I have shared Megan’s house before on my other blog, but I thought it made perfect sense to give her house another round of viewers. Yes, this house is a dream for any mid-century modern enthusiasts. She loves it!

You did spot an Eames Lounge chair… and a Noguchi table. But, almost everything in Megan’s house comes from Ebay or thrift stores. She scored those two beloved pieces on Ebay, for example.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with splurging on a few classic pieces that will stay with you forever. If you do that, then just balance out the rest of your purchases as she did. This house is a great example of mixing high and low and making it work for her design aesthetic.
