Questionable Judgments – The Unwelcome Return of the Bodysuit

This is the first post of many that will be deemed Questionable Judgments. This will start out as an occasional page, but may become more frequent as there are a lot of questionable judgments out there. It will consist of pictures our readers submit or items we see on the street or find in stores that we consider to be perplexing fashion statements. Our QJ for Week 1, is the bodysuit - a close cousin to the leotard. The recent return of this fad was brought to my attention by my dear friend and fashion mentor, Mindy. I still have yet to see one in stores but have heard it is true from more than one source and was even sent a link for this bodysuit found at Forever 21 by a friend in hopes that a post would ensue.

Let's discuss. For babies (onesies), fine, I get it - it makes sense. Maybe even for yoga, I guess. For everyday wear, not so much. Two words, people, snap crotch. This is neither convenient, nor comfortable. Unfortunately, I cannot lie, so I must tell you that I have, in fact, worn a bodysuit at one point in my life. It is not something I am proud of but it was not mine and I hold fast to this. My sister Jamie owned it (sorry Jame). I borrowed it because I thought she was cool and informed. But I can't really blame her, it was hip at the time. Let's talk logistics, every time you have to use the bathroom, these snaps have to be undone in addition to your pants, unless you can perform that pull your swimsuit to the side type of maneuver. Not cool or sanitary. Comfort: do you really want to sit on a extra bit of fabric and snaps all day long? Didn't think so. And would you ever wear it without pants? Please say no. So stop being lazy, tuck in your own shirt if you must, and unless you are in the circus, I don't see the point. However, I must be fair and say there is one instance when I can see a tiny positive of wearing one of these contraptions. If you were wearing a sleek, form fitting bodysuit, I could see this working well for anything high-waisted, whether it be pants or a skirt. But that is the only situation I can slightly justify for those of you who agree with this trend. Please share your thoughts (or horror stories) about this puzzling phenomenon.

Yes, not conducive to those of us with bladder problems reaching the proverbial end of the rope…..middle age. As I try to remain (hip), I am learning age appropriate(ness) as well. This will definitely be one item that shall remain on the racks as I pass on by with a smirk and a sigh.

  2. Jamie says:

Did I really own a bodysuit? Please tell me you made that up. I agree, two words…snap crotch.

Yeah Jame, ya did. Sorry to break it to you. You must’ve blocked that one out. I don’t blame you. All I remember is it was blue and white and maybe orange or yellow striped. And it was a weird almost washcloth-y material. Not the bathroom kind, but the kitchen kind. You know what I’m talking about. I think you had a plain colored one too. Hmm, I just had an idea what to buy you for your b-day gift when you come out here next weekend…

  3. I believe we had a friend in Shenandoah that wore these throughout middle school? Let’s stick to Spanx if we’re needing that extra slimming effect, or yes, tuck in your shirt.

    They just can’t be comfortable!

My favorite memories of body suits that come to mind are those of the lovely Brenda Walsh. I WISH I could conjure an image here, but think tight long sleeves, high-waisted large light denim jeans (tapered leg, flaring hip) and cowboy boots. As a former dancer who was forced to wear leotards non-stop, I was always puzzled why anyone would want to wear something so uncomfortable and unforgiving voluntarily.

  6. Elle Beeh says:

Ah ha… just as I had suspected. I also (gulp) admit to having worn one back in the day, and I’ve worn plenty of leotards for dance classes, but I am right with you on the completely absurdity of the body suit as a fashion item. Yikes!

  7. This is such a great post. It made me laugh!

  8. Mindy says:

I did it in 6th grade with bell-bottoms and a choker. I’m never going to do it again…I was mortified when I first spotted this QJ at H&M.

Even if you can’t SEE a camel toe, it doesn’t make it right.

  10. b says:

Guilty. I have to admit, I have two bodysuits. I got them last year at American Apparel – one in navy and one in black. I love them! They always stay tucked in and are perfect to layer under dresses…and I love layering.

  11. b says:

Also, it should be noted that my bodysuits do NOT have snaps.

  12. b just made me want a bodysuit.

  13. Haha, that’s so awful! Such a shame it’s coming back into style.

  14. Liz says:

Is no one else my age? :) As much as I am appalled by the return of bodysuits, I had many in Middle School! They were the hippest thing next to slap bracelets! Unfortunately, they were skin tight, so my mom deamed body suits inappropriate for her youngest daughter. I do remember pulling off the whole “wearing a sweatshirt over the body suit and removing it as soon as I was out of my mom’s sight” trick. Jamie, they were the hot thing back then…good for you for owning one! Again, appalled by the return!

Am I the only one who thinks your blog theme is fairly awesome? I’m guessing maybe its a custom theme that you simply bought? Regards, Pete.
